After the great success of RuPaul’sDrag race, the famous actor, model and drag queen jumps into a dandy suit for a new show. Good Work is just like fashion police, but this time, the crime is celebrity plastic surgery. Joining RuPaul on the set are Dr. Terry Dubrow of Botchedand makeup artist Sandra Vergara.
We mention this because a crucial question is raised in the show after Dr. Terry makes the remark “that face doesn't exist in nature!”. RuPaul is quick to respond with: "Well, what's so great about nature?”
Beats me.
The good, the bad, and the ugly
When they hear the words “plastic surgery”, most people imagine the very worst examples of overstretched faces and disproportional bodies (all good candidates for Botched). Bashing someone for having plastic surgery sure is a popular armchair sport. These people, however, tend to forget that most plastic surgery is good plastic surgery.
Moreover, people invest an incredible amount of time and money in makeup and clothing. What makes fake eyelashes and tons of mascara acceptable? Something is amiss here, and the concept of natural beauty seems inconsistent at best.
Tonight we are young
Some would say that it is very important if you are doing something temporary or permanent. But consider cosmetic tattoos, for example. They are used to enhance or replicate features of the body and face for good, and make them look more defined. It is even used in medical instances, for burn victims. They also make the daily application of makeup redundant. And I don’t see all the hatred here, which is for a good reason.
But why is plastic surgery a big deal then? I guess that people who have never been under the knife are the one saying you should embrace who you are. Often it is quite easy for them to say so, as often they are both young and beautiful.
When beauty gives you lemons
Though one might say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we haven’t all been blessed with a body we are comfortable in. Some people are not happy with the way they look. Others just want a little a little nip-tuck to change their life for the better.
If there is something wrong, we fix it. That’s what we humans do, so why shouldn’t we be able to repair our bodies too? We can come into this world with so many flaws and deformities that we do not have to live with, even though it is technically possible. Our peace of mind has to count for something, does it not? Modern technology offers us a way to correct our appearance. Plastic surgery doesn’t mean running from self-acceptance, it can be a step in this very direction.
Make it happen
In conclusion, plastic surgery does not change who you are on the inside, where it truly matters. Done right, it can add years to your life and boost self-esteem. Why would you have to suck it up, and live with your flaws? It seems to me RuPaul hit the spot with his question.
