Scars after surgery
This is a guest post article from Diana Smith, She is a caring mother of two beautiful girls interested in health and alternative medicine. This is her second time writing for Cliniconomy. Her first article was: How to Deal with the Ophthalmological Side Effects of Programming.

Scarring is an obligatory phenomenon after every surgery, no matter how complex it is. Our body has a tendency to heal on its own and scars after surgery are one of its possible ways to do it. During the process of regeneration, a new tissue grows and seals the wound, which again, prevents possible infections. In the early stage of improvement, oozing of blood is normal, after which a scab is formed. Many people don’t know how immense purpose a scab has. It closes the wound and protects it from inflammations and that is why you shouldn't touch or pick at it. Finally, it falls off when it is not needed anymore.

It is more likely that the scar will remain after the surgery, but the Doctor is not to be blamed about your scars after surgery. This phenomenon doesn't depend on the doctor’s experience or proficiency. On the contrary, there are numerous factors that simply cannot be taken into consideration before the surgery. Each of these factors depends on the sole patient. For example, a patient’s age, race, weight, genetic inheritance, habits, nutrition, how quickly the skin heals are just some of the possible effects that influence the scaring.

Also, don’t forget that we are not talking about a tiny cut with a knife or a paper; we are talking about the results of a real, serious surgery. Such incisions are deep and usually, there is a lot of skin removed during the performance, which influences the entire recovery.

However, there are some effective procedures patients might take up before and after the surgery, which will speed up the recovery process and help them minimize and reduce scars after surgery.

Effective ways to minimize and treat scars after surgery

  • Reduce your diet

First things first, you need to take care of your nutrition, both before and after the surgery. You should eat a lot of fresh food, such as vegetables and fruits and avoid flour, red meat, fatty and fast food. Green food has always been considered as a great antioxidant. The more vitamins and fibers are in the food, the faster the recovery will be.

  • Mind what you drink

Even completely healthy people need to drink a lot of water. This is especially important if the patient has gone through the medical intervention. It is usually suggested by the doctors that the patients drink filtered and bottled water, because it is microbiologically tested and purified. A cup of mild tea and a glass of red wine are always highly recommended, while coffee, carbonated and alcohol drinks are not allowed.

  • Give up smoking

Smokers should give up this unhealthy habit for several reasons. Even if you cannot stop smoking for good, you need to do it before and after the surgery. Tobacco produces a poisonous carbon monoxide which is carried within our blood cells, so our body is not provided with the sufficient amount of oxygen. This doesn’t influence scarring only, but the entire healing. Patients who don’t give up smoking a week before and after the surgery are highly endangered.

  • Gentle massage and an adequate cream

After the surgery, a massage of this area has always been suggested because it enhances the blow of new, fresh blood. After the massage, you should apply some cream to the incision, which will prevent the unwanted hydration and infections.

  • Silicone sheeting

Silicone sheeting is also very important since it lowers the scar and prevents it from further rising. Finally, it also protects and hydrates the skin, making it nourished and safe.

  • Natural ingredients

There are numerous natural ingredients that can be used as great antioxidants in order protect our skin from infection and burning.

One of them is definitely raw honey, which is applied directly on the wound. It is considered to be very effective antiseptic that helps our skin to recover faster. However, before you decide to use it, you should contact your doctor.

Shea butter is another natural product that can be used for such purposes. It is available in various creams, lotions and ointments and it should be applied to the newly created scar.

Aloe Vera is one of the most popular cosmetic products. It can be used by anyone, from the youngest to the oldest persons. It has nurturing effects on our skin, preventing swelling and possible redness.

  • Light exercise

Taking on light exercises has always been one of the most crucial steps when it comes to the recovery after surgery. However, you shouldn’t start exercising right after the operation. On the contrary, you need to rest for a while and wait for the incision to regenerate completely. Before you even think about exercising, you need to ask for professional help. Your doctor will give you some important suggestions and advise you which medical supplies you should use.

As you could probably see, although you cannot avoid the phenomenon of scars after surgery, you can definitely reduce or minimize it. This process depends of numerous factors, but at the same time, you can overcome them by sticking to some of the above mentioned treatments.
