Smoking is the leading cause death among the young people in our society. Few days ago, a friend and i were busy studying in one of the secluded areas here in our medical college.  After some hours of crude study my brain began to get too saturated that i realized that i was experiencing the law of diminishing return. There and then, an idea from the thin air popped into my saturated brain. The idea came as a question. I immediately shared the idea with my friend, and now i am about to do the same with you.

After some minutes, my friend and i have spent some time discussing about the topic, the discussion was  filled with arguments and facts and we came up with some answers which i thought would be nice to share here with you on cliniconomy.com. Meanwhile, for the fact that  i am approaching this post from an argumentative point of view i will be happy if you drop your own idea, either criticizing, adding and adjusting the five points i am about to drop below so as to help me come up with a more broad and secondary reasons why many smokers that are addicted to smoking will die early while few will live longer than expected.

Now i just recalled what i was thinking then that clouded my mind and rained down this question onto my brain. I was actually thinking about my late uncle who died last year from some complicated disease that i cannot be able to comprehend right now. He died at the age of 78. I was so puzzled, remembering that this man was a chain smoker right from his teens and he lived like that even when he was a soldier fighting on the biafran side during the Nigerian civil war. Of course i wasn' t born then but my parents told me so much about him and his lifestyle.  Yet again, i have seen so many young people die because of complicated diseases which came up as a result of them being smokers. As a matter of fact a friend of mine lost his cousin bro like this just earlier this year. The cousin brother wasn't a chain smoker as such, at least he is not as addicted as my uncle was but to be frank he died and when his doctor was dropping some comments about his death he mentioned something about his tobacco smoke and how it destroyed and disorganized his body systems and organs.  This two different cases watered the inquisitiveness in me and i swear this is were it has led me.

Before i commence let me share with you briefly some of the things i recently learned about cigarette smoking and its effect on the body system of cigarette smokers. smoking  is very dangerous both the primary type and secondary type. It shouldn't be what anybody should even try to give a second thought on. But the society we live in today are full of people smoking cigarette and have no value for their life and even for the life of the people around them in which they are putting at risk with the cigarette smoke polluted air.

Although it has being boldly written that  cigarette smokers are liable to die young but people still duff their heads low, smoking day by day like their life depends on it. Yes, that is true though, their life really depends on it like hell  because the nicotine present in cigarette is the addictive drug that makes smokers keep coming back for more. They will never feel normal or comfortable unless their system  have being satisfied off the urge and craving for nicotine.

Study has it that more than 7,000 chemicals are present in cigarette which diffuses together with the smoke into our body when the cigarette is lit up. About 60 of this chemicals have being scientifically proven to be carcinogenic (able to cause cancer)

Below are the top most dangerous chemicals i know that are contained in tobacco smoke, you can add yours later in the comment box.

  • Tar – this is the collective term for the various particles suspended in tobacco smoke. The particles contain chemicals, including several cancer-causing substances (carcinogens). Tar is sticky and brown, and stains teeth, fingernails and lung tissue. Tar contains the carcinogen benzo(a)pyrene.

  • Carbon monoxide – this odorless gas is fatal in large doses because it takes the place of oxygen in the blood. Each red blood cell contains a protein called hemoglobin that transports oxygen molecules around the body. However, carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin better than oxygen. This means that less oxygen reaches the brain, heart, muscles and other organs.

  • Hydrogen cyanide – the lungs contain tiny hairs (cilia) that help to clean the lungs by moving foreign substances out. Hydrogen cyanide stops this lung clearance system from working properly, which means the poisonous chemicals in tobacco smoke can build up inside the lungs. Other chemicals in smoke that damage the lungs include hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides, organic acids, phenols and oxidizing agents.

  • Free radicals – these highly reactive chemicals can damage the heart muscles and blood vessels. They react with cholesterol, leading to the build-up of fatty material on artery walls. Their actions lead to heart disease, stroke and blood vessel disease.

  • Metals – tobacco smoke contains dangerous metals including arsenic, cadmium and lead. Several of these metals are carcinogenic.

  • Radioactive compounds – tobacco smoke contains radioactive compounds that are known to be carcinogenic.

The factors that i think may be the reason why most smokers live longer that others are as thus stated below

IMMUNITY

Although cigarette smoke affects the body's immune system drastically to the point of no return by reducing the level of protective anti oxidants in the cigarette smokers blood. It will require a body with a very strong immune system to still keep up with life and its processes after series of invasions by the carcinogenic chemicals present in tobacco.

LIFESTYLE

The type of life lived by the smoker does count. I think it depends if he further consumes more dangerous substances like alcohol, drugs and so on. Further damage to the body organs can speed up the destruction of the system.

QUALITY OF FOOD

I also think the quality of food also matters. Because, eating quality food will help increase the rate of repairs in your body after the damages done by the chemicals to the organs.

DETOXIFICATION

A detox agent might also have a role to play here. A smoker who in a way or the other gets lucky to detoxify his system off the harmful chemicals might have more years added to his life than the smoker who doesn't detoxify his/her body.

GENETIC MAKEUP

Almost the same with number one(1) above. nature makes its own choices here. Every bodies genetic make up aren't the same. finally i also think some people have being genetically programmed to resist the bad effect of this chemicals on their organs.

Whether you are planning to live long or die early. The fact still remains, as a smoker, you are apparently destroying your organs and disorganizing your body system.

So, up you dear reader. Do you concur to,  or let me use the word agree to the points i stated above? or do you have any opposition to add to it. Do you also have any question? let us meet down here on the comment box to talk about it.
