OphthalmologicalDoes your man spend more than eight hours in his line of work? The job circumstances for programmers may be tough, but there’s a way to evade the most adverse symptoms. Without taking special care of your vision and adjusting working conditions you may end up with the serious computer vision syndrome. Unfortunately, my husband stretched his luck a bit in that department. Now, he’s suffering from the consequences. Bear with me as I guide you through info I collected along the way in order to alleviate his hardship.

 

 

Prevention



  1. Thorough Checkup


Better safe than sorry. Don’t wait till it happens to you, but instead think more about the means to prevent it. First step of the way is visiting your doctor on regular basis for an all-around examination. American national health institute advises to start the checkup after receiving our first computer-based position. Consult with your specialist about the frequency of use and working distance.

  1. Proper Lighting


Set the lightning to optimal. By that I mean limit the presence of bright light, outdoor and indoor, to the half of the standard office illumination. Exploit drapes or blinds, as well as dimmer bulbs. Position the monitor away from direct light source. Consider transition to full spectrum fluorescent light that would mimic the actual sunlight.

  1. Glare Reduction


The surrounding surfaces such as finished walls and reflective veneers can also be the cause of eyestrain. We installed the anti-glaring protective cover for the screen. The shine-free walls are my warm recommendation. We both wear glasses so we equipped ourselves with the special pair each. The glasses have anti-reflective coating, which is common for sunwear too.

  1. Upgrade your display


If it’s at all possible, the best is to replace your old cathode ray tube monitor with the modern LCD. We have already done it thankfully, since the old one had a slight annoying waver, harmful for the eyes. It’s even worse if the refresh rate is lower than 75 Hz. Also, opt for larger displays, not under 19 inches.

  1. Display settings


Easiest step – adjust your display settings on computer. Blend the brightness setting with the workstation light conditions. Modify text size and contrast: black on white is a proven success. Color temperature should be put on lower blue light readings (that is, lower temperature) that basically cause the trouble to our eyes. Buttons are often found on the monitor itself.

  1. Blinks and Breaks


Once I thought watching attentively without blinking is a special skill worth commending. Now I know it lead to my hubby’s eye dryness. Blinking lubricates the eye to prevent irritation. Do it several times every 15 minutes. Furthermore, make several shorter breaks instead of just two long. The recent studies showed tiny breaks benefit greatly to your eye health.

Symptoms


I recognized something was truly wrong when my husband started complaining about frequent headaches and somewhat blurry vision. We visited the doctor, and BAM, not such good news. The other signature symptoms are aforesaid dryness, eye fatigue, and shoulder and neck pain. Try to spot them on time, since being too late is no fun at all. Both your professional and personal life will suffer.
