A stroke is caused by the seizure of oxygen supply to a part in the brain. When the oxygen supply to a part
of the brain stops the cells occupying that area begins to die. This The patient may suddenly lose the
ability to speak, there may be memory
problems, or one side of the body can become
paralyzed.
The two main types of stroke include ischemic
stroke and hemorrhagic stroke .
# An Ischemic stroke-
accounts for about three-quarters of all strokes and occurs when a
blood clot, or thrombus, forms that blocks
blood flow to part of the brain. If a blood
clot forms somewhere in the body and
breaks off to become free-floating, it is
called an embolus. This wandering clot
may be carried through the bloodstream to
the brain where it can cause ischemic
stroke.
#A hemorrhagic stroke-
occurs when a blood vessel on the brain's surface ruptures and
fills the space between the brain and skull with
blood (subarachnoid hemorrhage) or when a defective artery in the brain bursts and fills the surrounding tissue with blood (cerebral hemorrhage).
Both types of stroke result in a lack of blood flow
to the brain and a buildup of blood that puts too much pressure on the brain.
A change in diet cannot guarantee stroke
prevention, but healthy eating can dramatically increase your chances of not having one. The best way to prevent a stroke is through lifestyle choices such are:
-A healthy diet
-Avoid smoking
-Taken plenty of exercise
-Avoid consuming alcohol to excess
Fat
-A high-fat diet can lead to a buildup of fatty plaque along the inside of your arteries, which causes them to narrow, increasing your risk of stroke.
You must know that not all fats are the same. A small amount of unsaturated fat is an essential part of a healthy
diet. However, avoid saturated fats as these will
raise your cholesterol levels, which can lead to
narrowing of the arteries.
When using fats for cooking, avoid lard and ghee,
and opt for unsaturated fats such as sunflower,
vegetable and olive oils.
-A high intake of salt can increase your blood
pressure, which increases your stroke risk. Limit the amount of salt in your diet to around 6 grams.
Remember that much of the salt you consume will
be hidden in pre-prepared food, so try to avoid adding extra salt to your meals.
-Recommended Diet
A healthy diet, that is low in fat and high in fibre
will help prevent stroke. Unsaturated fats in foods
such as oily fish, avocados, nuts and seeds, help
keep your blood system healthy.
-Consume foods containing folic acids eg; Broccoli(a plant of the cabbage family that is eaten as vegetable) folic acid helps to lower the level of furring in the arteries. It's best to lightly
steam the flowers from the broccoli not boil them, as this helps the
broccoli keep the B vitamin.
- Eat Oranges and any other vitamin C rich foods, are
also a good choice(because they are antioxidants and combats free
radicals, which damage the lining of arteries, increasing the risk of stroke.
-Eat enough carrots as it contains beta-carotene(the plant pigment that makes carrots orange in colour) it is another substance that act as an antioxidant.
-A healthy diet is high in both soluble and insoluble fibre.
It is the soluble fibre, which is found in pears, oats,
apples, bananas, potatoes and other fruits and vegetables, that is important in preventing stroke.
This type of fibre has a gummy consistency, which
traps cholesterol and helps carry it out of your
body through your digestive system, thus helping
to lower your cholesterol levels and keep your
circulatory system healthy.
-Adding garlic to your cooking as it contains allicin which helps reduce your chances of blood clots.
-A diet rich in magnesium helps promote a healthy circulatory system. It reduces your risk of stroke by up to 9%, as well as decreasing your risk of
angina(a chest pain,or shortage of breath associated with lesser degrees of arterial blockagewith.
Other Risk Factors
-Being overweight can increase your blood pressure, which in turn increases your risk of suffering a stroke. Eating a healthy diet, and leading an active life will help keep your weight within the recommended range.
-Regular exercise helps reduce your risk of stroke by keeping your circulatory system healthy, lowering your cholesterol level, and reducing your blood pressure. Healthy adults should take around 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every week.
Exercise can also promote feelings of well-being
and relaxation, which combats stress, another risk
factor for strokes.
-Being a smoker doubles your chances of suffering
from a stroke, as it narrows your arteries and
makes it more likely a blood clot will form.
-Stress is an important risk factor for strokes as
well as other serious diseases. Eating well,
exercising, getting plenty of rest and generally
taking good care of yourself will help keep your
stress levels down.
Your mental health has a very real and direct
impact on your physical health.
