Fibroid

Fibroid in the uterus commonly occur in the womb of women who are in their 30s and 40s. Uterine fibroid are dense fibrous tissues that appear as benign tumors that grow along the muscle layer and connective tissues in the uterus. Uterine Fibroid can grow as a single tumor or they can grow as clusters. In America, one out of five women has fibroid in the uterus. Although they are not considered dangerous, they have a serious effect on a woman's health.

What Causes Fibroid in the Uterus

The cause of fibroid is unknown. There are common risk factors associated with fibroid like obesity. Some researchers have come up with the idea that fibroid in the uterus are caused by gene mutations. This link has yet to be explored, and research is still being done. The idea of gene mutation comes from the known facts of what happens in a female body in terms of hormones. The two major hormones that drive the growth of fibroid are estrogen and progesterone. The way these two interact with each other and with other factors causes cell growth.
Symptoms of Fibroid in the Uterus
In the beginning, most women go on without knowing they have this stuff in them. Sometimes fibroid are so small that women never know they have them unless they go to a gynecologist. For some women, there are symptoms that show up that usually manifest during a menstrual cycle. The presence of this stuff in the uterus can cause heavy, painful and long-lasting bleeding. The bigger they get the intense the abdominal cramping gets. When this pain gets intense it can affect the quality of life it can be so debilitating that you cannot do anything and some people even become anemic. Some symptoms of fibroid cause frequent urination. When fibroid grow closer to the bladder, they can put pressure that can make controlling of your urine execration difficult. Sometimes fibroid grow close to the rectum and cause constipation. Some symptoms of fibroid include swelling of the ankles, leg pain and general accumulation of fluids in places they are not supposed to be.
Sometimes fibroid in the uterus can cause infertility. This does not mean that all infertile women suffer from fibroid or women with fibroid can never get pregnant because some do get pregnant, but most women would bleed out. If you want to avoid the unpleasantness of having fibroid and you cannot deal with the pain or fertility issues, removing fibroid surgically may be the only way to deal with the condition. You should explore other alternative treatments before you go for the surgical route.
Uterine Fibroid Treatment
There are different kinds of uterine fibroid treatment. Fertility and making babies are obviously a big consideration. Anything that is done to affect the womb will affect the ability of the womb to carry a baby to full term.

  1. Most doctors are quick to recommend a Hysterectomy, which is an operation that involves surgical removal of the entire uterus. Removing the Uterus means, the woman will never be able to bear children.

  2. A Myomectomy is a surgical procedure that removes tumors only and not the uterus. This operation depends on the location of the tumor and the extent of the fibroid.

  3. Fibroid in the uterus grow depending on where they are placed in terms of blood supply. The fibroid shrink until they go away completely.

  4. In addition, an ultrasound procedure uses high frequency sound waves to heat and destroy the tumors. This procedure also depends on the position of the fibroid.

  5. There are medications that can be used to shrink tumors. The medication affects the production of hormones to affect the growth of tumors. Without estrogen and progesterone fibroid in the uterus might shrink. Drugs that control hormone production can have side effects that you should discuss with your doctor.
