Medical abortion uses two oral drugs to clear the uterus. It is an alternative to surgery and generally called non-surgical abortion. However, there are a couple of things that you should know if you are planning to go through abortion through drugs.

Not Successful All the Time
There is no guarantee that medical abortion will be successful. Any woman who wants to have this non-surgical abortion should be ready to undergo a surgical abortion in case the abortion through drugs fails.
In medical abortion, two drugs are taken by mouth. The first drug weakens the attachment of the fetus to the womb, whereas the second drug causes contractions and bleeding that expels the unborn child out of the woman's body. These drugs are taken two days apart. They may cause birth defects. Thus, if unsuccessful, the woman must have surgical abortion.
There are times that the abortion is not complete. This is why the woman needs to attend the examination one to two weeks after taking the drug. This examination verifies if the abortion is successful. If not, a surgical abortion will be recommended.
Eligibility for Medical Abortion
Medical abortion is not for everyone. Women can abort pregnancy through drugs as soon as they have confirmed pregnancy and the pregnancy is not more than 8 weeks. In short, women who are in the latter stages of pregnancy are disc rouged to have an abortion.
As aforementioned, a part of the medical abortion eligibility is to be willing to undergo surgical abortion if it fails and to return to the clinic for the follow-up examination.
Moreover, the doctor or nurse will clarify the medical abortion contraindications. Women who have had an ectopic pregnancy or a pregnancy outside the uterus may not be eligible for an abortion through drugs. In addition, women who have the following cannot have medical abortion:
  • allergy to the drugs or any of their components
  • asthma that is uncontrolled or being treated with corticosteroids
  • porphyria: a disease that is characterized by abnormally metabolized hemoglobin
  • malfunctioning adrenal glands
  • cardiovascular problems
  • very high blood pressure
Women who also have an intra-uterine contraceptive device in the uterus are not eligible for abortion through drugs.
Extremely Safe Abortion
Although the success rate of abortion is not 100%, many women prefer it because of its extreme safety. The drugs used for it have been studied worldwide and have been used millions of time.
Nonetheless, women who consider abortion through drugs should understand the risk. The process and drugs are generally safe, but there are very few instances, roughly 1% probability, to experience severe bleeding, which requires a surgery.
Women have several reasons to consider an abortion and some of which are age, financial problem, having too many children already, the last child is too young or too old, and problems with the father. Fortunately, women do not have to undergo a surgery right away. They may consider medical abortion, which is extremely safe, if they are eligible but must be ready to undergo surgical abortion if it is unsuccessful.
